POSITION: ENVIORNMENTAL SPECIALIST

DESCRIPTION

An employee in this class utilizes scientific principles and technical practices to the protection and optimum use of air, land and water resources as well as the management of urban development leading to the improvement in the health and well-being of people and their environment. Duties are complex in nature relative to the techniques and methodologies employed in working with environmental issues. Work is received from the supervisor of the unit.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

  • Gathers data on environmental issues to assess pollution problems;
  • Performs preliminary environmental analysis, research, surveys and studies to determine their effects;
  • Collects soil and water samples to be used in the analysis of environmental pollutants;
  • Conducts investigations into sources of pollution to determine the degree of compliance with appropriate laws, rules, and regulations;
  • Complies statistical data from analytical findings and assist in the preparation of scientific reports and correspondence;
  • Writes reports of a routine nature and provides general information to the public;
  • Works with hazardous substances in cleaning up environmental toxic and wastes;
  • Performs other related duties as may be required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the principles of natural science as it relates to environmental control, and its natural habitat;
  • Knowledge of current techniques and principles of environmental control;
  • Knowledge of technical terminology used in environmental control;
  • Knowledge of basic procedures used in sampling and related data collection;
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures and purposes of investigations and analysis;
  • Knowledge of Federal and Local Environmental laws and regulations;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to read, write, understand and follow oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare scientific and technical reports as required;
  • Ability to perform statistical computations;
  • Ability to understand and interpret environmental laws, rules and regulations;
  • Ability to read, write, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all persons contacted during the course of work.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science or related field and (5) five years of progressively more responsible work where the primary aspects of employment was in environmental science; or
  • Master of Science degree in Environmental Science or related field and (2) years of progressively more responsible work where the primary aspects of employment was in environmental science.
