VIDOH assures implementation of mitigation efforts to minimize disruption to schools

ST. CROIX, USVI – The Juanita Gardine PreK-8 School and the St. Croix Adult Education Center are not expected to be impacted by the Charles Harwood Memorial Complex demolition, which is set to begin on Monday, April 24. Gardine’s promotional exercises, scheduled for May 23 in the school’s auditorium, are not expected to be affected; the Adult Education graduation will be held off-site on May 16.

According to the V.I. Department of Health (VIDOH), for the duration of the demolition, work will be conducted between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, excluding holidays. To avoid noise pollution, there will be no blasting on the site. Movement of building materials will be concentrated during the middle of the school day and after student pick-up times.

VIDOH has also announced that demolition contractor Lemartec USVI will implement mitigation measures to include privacy and dust screens around the work areas, the use of a water dust suppression machine and wind direction monitoring. Furthermore, Lemartec has developed a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan and will use best management practices to monitor and prepare for inclement weather.

For more detailed information about the demolition process, see the press release disseminated by the Department of Health on April 13, 2023.
