Lockhart Summer Camp Parades for Literacy

The Lockhart Elementary School Dolphins 21st Century Summer Camp held its annual Literacy March and Book Parade on Friday, July 21, 2017. Campers, joined by Lockhart’s Summer Enrichment Program and Ivanna Eudora Kean High School’s Summer Bridge Program students, marched through the immediate Sugar Estate community, made their way past the Charlotte Amalie High School and back to the school’s campus.

Dolphins 21st Century Summer Camp Assistant Director Rhashaunda Charles-Jones said the event gets students excited about summer reading. “The students get to dress up as characters of their favorite books and parade around the community rallying for literacy,” she said.

The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority’s mascot, Chipper made an appearance and Kindercamp students, also located on Lockhart’s school campus, joined in on the fun as they paraded around the school with their favorite books in hand.

Following the parade, students returned to their classrooms and were treated to story-telling sessions with volunteer readers from the IEKHS Summer Bridge students and staff members of the V.I. Department of Tourism.
